Stefan Litwin – Texts and Conversations

Stefan Litwin is a pianist, composer, and teacher. In his work, practice and reflection, action and contemplation come together. He questions music about its meaning and its contexts.
Litwin is the son of Jewish parents who, through luck and courage, escaped Hitler’s henchmen. His complex transatlantic family history and his reflections on the roots of fascism, intolerance, and violence have shaped his political awareness and influenced both his repertoire and the themes of his compositions.
He plays, composes, and writes about “committed music,” thereby opposing views that seek to declare “the political harmlessness of all artistic production.”

Reflections on the 40th anniversary of the military coup against Salvador Allende

40 years ago, on September 11, 1973, a bloody military coup ended the attempt of Salvador Allende's socialist government to create by democratic means a more just society in Chile. Years of terror followed, hundreds of thousands were forced into exile. In the meantime, the collective memory of September 11 has been occupied by the attacks in New York and Washington of 2001. Stefan Litwin reactivates the memory of the Chilean dramatic events with a new recording of Frederic Rzewski's legendary piano cycle »The People United Will Never Be Defeated« and two of his own compositions. Prominent authors, among them Ernesto Cardenal, Eduardo Galeano, Carla Guelfenbein, Volker Braun und Adolf Muschg, have contributed hitherto unpublished texts.
